Volvo to unveil XC60 plug-in hybrid

ABR Staff Writer Published 05 January 2012

Volvo Car will unveil the new XC60 petrol plug-in hybrid at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, US.

The new gasoline powered XC60 basic drive train is similar to the Volvo's diesel powered V60 plug-in hybrid which is set for sale in Europe this year.

The new plug-in hybrid is equipped with a four-cylinder turbocharged 2.0-liter engine which powers the front wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission and the rear axle is driven by an electric motor powered by the 12 kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

The new hybrid comes with a three driver-selectable modes as Pure, Hybrid and Power, enabling the drivers to optimize fuel economy in different types of trips with the total combined power output of about 350hp of the three units.

According to the company the new XC60 can achieve about 50 mpg in the Hybrid mode operation and can achieve 28 miles in pure mode marking the total operating range of up to 600 miles (960 km).

The company predicts a 0-to-60-mph time of about 5.8 seconds in Power mode with a top speed of 130 mph, and a 3300 pound towing capacity.

The fully charging of battery takes about 3.5 hours with a 220-volt charging source or about 7.5 hours with a 110-volt outlet.

The XC60, which was intended for the American and Chinese markets, will debut as a concept in Detroit before its series production a few years from now.
