Toyota Prius Tops Auto Sales In Japan

ABR Staff Writer Published 05 June 2009

Toyota Motor’s latest edition of Prius hybrid has become Japan's best selling car in terms of monthly sales in May, overtaking its competitor, Honda Motor’s new brands, “Insight” and “Fit”.

According to the Japan Automobile Dealers Association, Toyota Prius’ domestic sales in this month of May totaled 10,915 vehicles, as compared to 5,079 vehicles a year earlier.

Toyota offered its third-generation model Prius, which went on sale on May 18, at just over $20,900, slashing nearly $3,100 from the price of the previous version. The new model has a larger 1.8-liter engine and greater fuel efficiency than the older one.

The rise in the sales of hybrid cars are mainly because of government subsidies, including tax breaks for buyers of fuel-efficient environment-friendly cars.

Honda Motor’s Fit occupied second position in May, with monthly sales of 8,859 vehicles, followed by Insight with 8,183 vehicles.
