Toyota Plans To Debut New Midsize Lexus-based Hybrid

ABR Staff Writer Published 21 August 2009

The automaker seeks to expand its lineup of electric-gas hybrids

Toyota Motor is planning to debut within this year a new medium-sized hybrid sedan, the SAI. The new vehicle would be an alternative to the company's current Prius and would be bigger than the Prius.

The Lexus HS250h was released in mid-July. The SAI would have the same basic structure but the exterior and interior designs would differ, reported the Japan Times.

Akio Toyoda, president of Toyota, said the automaker would focus on diversifying its hybrids, especially with the Prius and the new hybrid-only Lexus sedan receiving robust orders on the back of recent government subsidies and tax breaks for energy-saving cars.

Toyota is also planning to release a cheaper compact hybrid based on its Vitz model with better fuel efficiency than the new Prius and a hybrid minivan as early as 2011.
