PennDOT orders 10 hybrid buses from Azure Dynamics

LBR Staff Writer Published 24 June 2008

Azure Dynamics, a developer of hybrid-electric and electric powertrains for commercial vehicles, has received an order from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation for 10 hybrid buses with an option for 15 additional buses at a later date.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has ordered 18 passenger Azure-StarTrans hybrid para-transit CitiBuses for delivery in 2008. Azure claims that its Azure Series-Hybrid CitiBus system specified by the PennDOT has unique attributes like engine-off driving while electronically supporting key ancillary functions like air conditioning, power steering and braking. The powertrain, with a GM Vortec 4.8L engine, reportedly offers over a 40% improvement in fuel economy, and a 30% reduction in carbon emissions in city conditions. Scott Harrison, CEO of Azure Dynamics, said: Azure's hybrid technology continues to gain traction with proactive fleet managers who value our performance, significant fuel economy improvements, emissions reductions and long-term maintenance cost savings.
