GM Plans To Cancel Production Of Chevrolet Malibu Sedan' Hybrid-electric Version
General Motors (GM) is planning to stop the production of hybrid-electric version of Chevrolet Malibu sedan for the 2010 model year, owing to declining sales.
The US market slump, coupled with volatility in demand for fuel-efficient vehicles, has led to a backlog of inventory of the vehicles on dealer lots.
A GM spokesman was quoted as saying that the company made the decision because of a “sufficient stock of 2009,” and said that “starting up production in the near future is possible, but not likely.”
Fuel-efficient hybrid-electric versions of Chevrolet Malibu were introduced in 2008, to enhance the portfolio of fuel-efficient models in order to compete effectively with Japanese automakers. However, GM will continue to manufacture hybrid versions of its trucks, including Chevrolet Silverado and Cadillac Escalade, in 2010 - as quoted in wsj.com.
