GM India To Launch New Car

ABR Staff Writer Published 05 June 2009

In spite of the bankruptcy of its US parent, the Indian arm of General Motors (GM) is all set to introduce a new variant of its small car, Spark.

GM India has ambitious plans to introduce three new cars this year, and it has no intention to cut staff or to postpone its expansion plans. The automaker is expected to launch the new Spark model this week.

Karl Slym, President and Managing Director of GM India, said: “We will remain aggressive in all areas of our business and continue to introduce new and exciting products.”

“Our product programs and other plans for the future remain on track,” he added.

GM India is also investing more than $200 million to start its first car engine and transmission factory in early 2010.

The company is now planning to develop a new INR200,000 ($4,000) small car to be its cheapest globally, and will be positioned below the ‘Spark' mini car.
