Ford Canada To Negotiate New Deal With CAW

ABR Staff Writer Published 09 June 2009

In an effort to gain a competitive edge and outdo its auto counterparts, Ford Canada seeks to negotiate a new labour deal with the Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) union.

Chrysler Canada and General Motors Canada have signed new cost-cutting labour agreements with the union. Ford Canada said that the new cost-saving labour deals at Chrysler and GM, are hurting the company's ability to compete.

CAW recently signed new contracts to cut Chrysler's costs by about $17 an hour and GM's by about $20 an hour.

David Mondragon, President and Chief Executive, Ford Canada, said: “We are very anxious to sit down with the CAW. We've got to bring ourselves in line, not only with our competitors here in Canada, but with our other manufacturing facilities in the United States.”

Even though, Ford Motor has been stung by plunging sales of cars and trucks, it still managed to avoid bankruptcy. The company is the only one of the Detroit’ Big Three that has not asked for a government bailout so far or filed for bankruptcy in the US.
