Federal-Mogul launches new oil control ring

ABR Staff Writer Published 18 August 2010

Federal-Mogul has launched a new two-piece LKZ oil control ring design for direct-injection gasoline engines, which reduces oil consumption by up to 50% and friction by up to 15%.

The new LKZ ring combines a stepped surface and taper on its contacting edge, which provides pressure to the cylinder wall on downstroke and a lesser effect on upstroke.

In addition, the downstroke pressure returns oil that lubricates cylinder to the oil pan, as opposed to allowing oil to enter combustion chamber which enhances fuel economy and reduces CO2 emissions.

The company said that the LKZ ring can also be coated with its DLC (diamond-like carbon) coating to even further reduce engine friction.

Federal-Mogul powertrain energy senior vice president Rainer Jueckstock said that LKZ rings are ideal for highly loaded conditions increasingly seen in gasoline engines, particularly units with direct injection, and provides fuel economy benefit and reduces CO2.
