DENSO unveils lithium-ion battery pack for stop/start vehicles

ABR Staff Writer Published 05 October 2012

Japanese automotive products manufacturer DENSO has developed a new lithium-ion battery pack to enhance fuel efficiency for vehicles equipped with stop/start systems.

With the new battery pack, the stop/start system can use regenerative power than current conventional systems that use a single lead-acid battery.

The company said the new lithium-ion battery pack improves the stop/start vehicle's fuel economy by storing regenerated power and then supplying the stored regenerated power to the electrical and electronic components.

DENSO's new lithium-ion battery pack incorporates a battery management unit and power supply control switch, as well as battery cells that are provided by a third-party source.

The battery management unit is used to monitor and control the voltage of the lithium-ion battery cells to maintain the charge level to protect them from overcharge and over-discharge.

Based on the operational status of the vehicle, power supply control switch controls the charging of the battery cells by the energy captured during deceleration and braking.

Additionally, the switch also controls the amount of power supplied to the car navigation, audio, and other systems during driving.

The rechargeable lithium-ion battery cells store more regenerated power to vehicle's electronic and electrical components.

DENSO supplies the lithium ion battery pack, the TS starter and Cold Storage Evaporator on the Suzuki Wagon R, which Suzuki Motor launched to market earlier this month.
