Chrysler To Produce Jeep Compass In China

ABR Staff Writer Published 20 August 2009

The venture would start production of vehicles by the second half of 2011

China's Guangzhou Auto, now a Chinese partner of Fiat Group, and the Italian automaker's newly acquired Chrysler Group have inked an agreement to jointly make Jeep-brand SUVs in central Chinese city of Changsha, reported in globaltimes.cn.

The report stated that the Jeep Compass would be the first model to be made in the Changsha plant of the new Guangzhou-Fiat joint venture. The Italian - Chinese venture would start building the new plant later this year and is likely to start production and sale of Fiat and Chrysler vehicles by the second half of 2011.

The two partners would use the existing Chinese stores that are selling imported Fiats in the country to distribute vehicles sourced from the Italian firm. In recent years, Chrysler has imported many Jeep models to China, such as Compass and Commander, the Grand Cherokee, Wrangler Sahara and Rubicon.
